JAGRATHA SAMITHI

What is Jagratha Samithi?

Jagratha Samithi is a local-level protection forum for women and children that works continuously and vigilantly to ensure their rights, physical and mental well-being, and safety of life, and to prevent violence, violation of rights and social exclusion against them.

Jagratha Samithis function as an immediate intervention mechanism in matters requiring urgent action at the local level, with the objective of providing a protection system. The Samithis may also take up cases and issues that have been neglected due to the absence of appropriate committees or mechanisms, and may make use of the legal protections and support systems available to women and children.

Objectives

  1. To protect the rights of women and children and to ensure strong interventions and necessary arrangements for redressal against any form of violence, discrimination, violation of justice, exploitation or denial of rights against them.
  2. To receive any complaint involving women and children and to provide appropriate solutions through immediate interventions or available support mechanisms.
  3. To forward complaints and issues that cannot be resolved by the Jagratha Samithi to the District Jagratha Samithi, Women's Commission, other government mechanisms and legal aid agencies, and to ensure that the outcome of such interventions reaches the grassroots level through follow-up action.
  4. To coordinate women and girls with various government-level agencies and schemes established for the protection of their rights. To coordinate and facilitate the activities of other agencies working towards similar objectives with the Jagratha Samithi.
  5. To implement activities aimed at creating a social environment in which women and children are protected from all forms of problems and violations.
  6. To form various types of collective groups and make use of people's participatory mechanisms for achieving the objectives.
  7. To provide social monitoring and support for women and child-related interventions in situations where there is a possibility of abuse or exploitation.
